1 Library of Congress
Souvent appelée Bibliothèque du Congrès dans le monde francophone, la Library of Congress (LoC) est fondée en 1800 en tant que bibliothèque du Congrès américain, pour fournir la documentation juridique nécessaire aux membres du Congrès. En deux siècles, elle devient la plus grande bibliothèque mondiale. Située à Washington D.C., sur le Capitol Hill, elle comprend 21 salles de lecture. Jouant le rôle de bibliothèque nationale aux Etats-Unis, elle est riche de 130 millions de documents dans de nombreuses langues et sur tous les supports possibles, dont 29 millions d’imprimés, 58 millions de manuscrits, 2,7 millions d’enregistrements sonores, 12 millions de photographies et 4,8 millions de cartes (chiffres de 2006). Outre le fait de renseigner le public sur les collections, le catalogue en ligne constitue une base bibliographique inappréciable utilisée dans le monde entier. La création de la bibliothèque numérique date de 1994. Les documents numériques représentent 10 téraoctets (To) de données en 2006. En novembre 2005, la Library of Congress lance un projet de bibliothèque numérique mondiale sous le nom de World Digital Library (WDL). La WDL rassemblerait les collections de nombreuses institutions dans le monde. -

Depuis la fin 1999, l’Internet Archive constitue aussi des collections numériques spécifiques, par exemple les sites relatifs au 11 septembre 2001, les sites relatifs aux élections de 2000 (présidentielles) et 2002 (élection du Congrès et des gouverneurs des Etats), les sites des pionniers du web, le Million Book Project (10.520 livres en avril 2005, intégrés ensuite dans l’Universal Library), des archives de films de la période 1903-1973, des archives de concerts "live" récents, des archives de logiciels, etc. Toutes ces collections sont en consultation libre sur le web, y compris la grande bibliothèque numérique (Text Archive) en cours de constitution (voir la notice précédente).Voir aussi: Internet Archive, Million Book Project. -

La British Library est la bibliothèque nationale du Royaume-Uni, et l’une des grandes bibliothèques mondiales, avec 150 millions de documents dans de très nombreuses langues, et trois millions de nouveaux documents chaque année. Ses catalogues en ligne constituent des bases bibliographiques inappréciables. Signe des temps, en novembre 2000, la British Library met en ligne la version numérique de la Bible de Gutenberg, scannée en mode image à partir des deux exemplaires complets présents dans ses collections. -
